What Should Foreign Guests Wear to an Indian Wedding?
A Simple Guide from an Indian Menswear Designer
Every wedding season, we meet guests from different parts of the world walking into our studio in Delhi with the same question.
“We’re attending an Indian wedding… but what should we wear?”
Many of them are excited but also hesitant. Their biggest concern is simple:
“If I buy an Indian outfit, will I ever wear it again?”
The good news is — with the right styling, many Indian garments can become versatile wardrobe pieces that work far beyond the wedding itself.
Over the years, we’ve noticed that foreign guests naturally gravitate toward a few silhouettes that make them feel comfortable, elegant, and part of the celebration.
Here are five options that work beautifully.
1. The Bandhgala — The Most Elegant Choice
The Bandhgala is often the easiest entry point for foreign guests.
Structured like a tailored jacket, it feels familiar yet distinctly Indian. Many of our international clients love it because it has the elegance of a tuxedo but the character of traditional Indian tailoring.
The best part? A Bandhgala can easily be worn later for formal dinners or special events.

2. The Nehru Jacket with Kurta — Relaxed and Festive
For daytime ceremonies or sangeet evenings, the Nehru jacket paired with a kurta is a favourite.
It feels celebratory without being too formal.
What many guests appreciate is the versatility — the jacket can later be styled with shirts, while the kurta works beautifully for vacations or summer gatherings.

3. The Achkan — A Regal Indian
Some guests like to fully embrace the grandeur of an Indian wedding.
For them, the Achkan becomes a memorable choice.
Styled with elegant brooches, enamel buttons, and traditional footwear like Peshawari sandals, it creates a striking look that feels both royal and sophisticated.

4. Printed or Embroidered Kurtas — Light and Joyful
Many foreigners fall in love with printed and embroidered kurtas.
They are comfortable, colourful, and perfectly suited for long wedding celebrations.
These kurtas often become favourite travel pieces later — worn during holidays, resort dinners, or summer evenings.

5. The Indo-Western Jacket — Where Cultures Meet
One of the most exciting pieces for international guests is the Indo-Western jacket.
It blends Indian craftsmanship with modern tailoring and works beautifully with both traditional trousers and Western separates like chinos or denim.
For many guests, it becomes a keepsake piece from the wedding that stays in their wardrobe for years.

A Final Thought
Indian weddings are not just ceremonies — they are vibrant celebrations of culture, colour, and community.
And the right outfit doesn’t just help you fit in — it allows you to truly be part of the celebration.
When chosen thoughtfully, these garments become more than wedding attire.
They become memories you can wear again.
